‘Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5’ Announced

After many teases from the legend himself, Activision has finally revealed a new Pro Skater

After an exclusive reveal from Game Informer, gamers can officially get ready to relive the nostalgia of yesteryear when the newest Pro Skater hits shelves later this year. Instead of aiming for niche novelties like Tony Hawk Ride, the newest skate game promises to have gameplay very similar to the stellar Underground and the previous Pro Skater games.

According to the reveal, the game will feature special abilities such as power ups and will host several special missions that allow gamers to use items and “projectiles.” On top of the new gimmicks, this game will feature fully fleshed out online modes and is also expected to feature a couch co-op experience as well. On top of cooperative and competitive online, skate parks that users create can also be shared and downloaded for the first time. As long as the content is strong, fans of the series could be playing this game for a long, long time.

From a more opinionated point of view, the visuals of this game look decidedly last-gen. It is noted that the game will primarily focus on next-gen and last-gen won’t even receive a port until after the One and PS4. Looking at the visuals, though, these are either very early screens, or we won’t be getting an aesthetically next-gen Pro Skater. While visuals are less important to me then the way the game feels, I have to admit that these shots don’t get me too excited. On top of my qualms with the graphics, it should be noted that the developer of this game is the same team behind the lackluster Tony Hawk Ride and Pro Skater HD – both of which were disappointing.

Maybe I’m being too hard on the Pro Skater. As long as the same gameplay that many gamers enjoyed nearly a decade ago is still intact, the disappointing visuals can be forgiven. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 shreds its way to next-gen and PC later this year and will later be ported to the Xbox 360 and PS4.

What do you think of the reveal? Am I being too tough on the classic franchise, or are you skeptical of the game’s quality too? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter.
