Your comprehensive guide to the characters of Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is here
Despite having a three in the title, developer CD Projekt Red aims to make the latest Witcher game the most accessible iteration yet! In this guide, I’ll share with you all you need to know about the key characters in Witcher 3, so you can jump into the world feeling comfortable.
**Much of the information I’m about to share with you comes from the Witcher wiki that has been developed from both the games and the books**
Geralt of Rivia
Geralt is a Witcher (a monster hunter for hire) and the main protagonist of the Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski and its game adaptations. Geralt is known also as ‘Gwynbleidd ‘(meaning “The White Wolf”) as well as ‘Butcher of Blaviken’. Like other Witchers, Geralt possesses superhuman abilities and are expert swordsmen.
Shortly after being born, Geralt was taken by his mother to the Wolf School — the Kaer Morhen stronghold. Geralt survived numerous mutations during the ‘Trial of the Grasses’, through which he gained practically superhuman physical and mental abilities (increased reflexes, speed, strength and enhanced hearing) surprisingly well. Geralt’s white hair, completely lacking pigment, is a side effect of said experiments. After finishing the witcher training, he embarked into the world on his horse called The Roach to hunt monsters.
Geralt, and the Witcher series in general, are all about grey moral decisions. Unlike games like Mass Effect, Witcher doesn’t have have a good and bad obvious decision. Every choice in this series have ramifications which ultimately lead to one of the game’s 36 endings.
Yennefer of Vengerberg is a sorceress who lived in the capital city of Aedirn, Vengerberg. She was the youngest member of the Council of Sorcerers and later the Lodge of Sorceresses attempted to recruit her. She is the love of witcher Geralt of Rivia and a mother figure to Ciri. She is always wearing black and white clothing, and uses lilac and gooseberry perfumes. Being of 1/4th elven decent, she is considered a quadroon.
As most sorceresses, Yennifer is sterile. In the novels, she secretly sought a way of restoring her fertility. She gave her motherly love to Ciri — the child destined for Geralt by the ‘Law of Surprise’. She also taught Ciri about magic while in Ellander, at the Temple under the watchful eye of Nenneke. She was royal advisor to king Demavend of Aedirn and a friend of Triss Merigold.
Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon – Ciri for short -was born in 1251, most likely during the Belleteynholiday – a princess of Cintra, daughter of Pavetta and Duny and granddaughter of queen Calanthe. As far as the games go, Ciri is making her debut with The Wild Hunt, so the game will make a point of introducing her more formally than other characters.
Triss Merigold of Maribor is a sorceress. She is called the “Fourteenth of the Hill” because she was believed to have been killed during the Battle of Sodden Hill. She is a friend of Yennefer and witcher Geralt of Rivia, and unhappily in love with witcher Geralt of Rivia. She took care of Ciri at Kaer Morhen for some time and is like an older sister to her.
Triss was a member of King Foltest’s royal council along with Fercart and Keira Metz, as well as a founding member of the Lodge of Sorceresses. She is a skilled healer and carries with her many magical potions, but she never uses them on herself because she is allergic to magic. Merigold is also quite a powerful mage, certainly when it counts most.
Vesemir is the oldest and most experienced Witcher at Kaer Morhen. He is a father figure to Geralt and the other witchers. He spends each winter in the fortress and sets off on the road when spring comes. He is an excellent fencer and has great knowledge of monsters.
He is the only one of the old witchers to survive the assault on Kaer Morhen, left for dead among the corpses of his fellow witchers. However, he was only a fencing instructor and thus did not possess the knowledge necessary to create new mutagens in order to mutate mere boys into witchers. Despite his age, Vesemir is robust and lively.
Emhyr var Emreis
Emhyr var Emreis is the current Emperor of Nilfgaard in the novels, tv series, movie and the games. He publicly is favourable to the Elder Race, in stark contrast to the Northern Monarchs.
His rule of Nilfgaard is highly aggressive, similar to his predeccesors; with large expansionist policies. This led to the two wars against the North described in the novels. Emhyr var Emreis is an intelligent and brilliant ruler. He picked his people well and crushed all plots against him. He was ruthless toward traitors and moved towards his goals with determination.
He is the father of Ciri and husband of the late Pavetta, having gone by the alias of Duny before assuming his rightful place as emperor.
