After leaks earlier this year, it seems the Victorian London themed ‘Victory’ has been renamed ‘Syndicate’
Earlier this morning, Ubisoft unveiled this year’s Assassin’s Creed game titled ‘Syndicate.’ Ignoring graphical issues that tend come with pre-alpha gameplay, a lot of what Ubisoft revealed was intriguing.
While much of the gameplay shown was more of the same, a couple new additions have been added to the game to spice up the now old-hat gameplay the series is known for. The most obvious (and most exciting) addition to ‘Syndicate’ is the inclusion of stage coaches. Not only can the player ride them to their objective to speed up traversal, but they also play an interesting role in combat. As shown in the livestream, the player is caught in a brief chase where he must cause other coaches to crash in order to evade them. While this new gameplay variant is welcome, it alone won’t save the franchise from its recent cut and paste formula.
The second new gameplay element I noticed was the zipline/grapple tool that allows the player to both scale a building instantaneously as well as cross streets effectively. The stream even depicted the player dropping from the zipline and performing an airborne assassination – pretty slick stuff.
A new feature the game showed off was the concept of gangs owning and operating the various burrows within Victorian London. Part of the mechanic had the player rescue gang members to join your cause and then they would ultimately help you in a brawl with rival gangs to protect gang territory. While this feature has been in other video games in the past, its inclusion in the Assassin’s Creed universe is a welcome addition.
While it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of another new game coming to next-gen consoles and PC this fall, it is also very easy to dismiss a new Assassin’s Creed title after the abysmal launch of ‘Unity’ last November. To try to rebuild consumer trust, the developers addressed the issues that the game had with this video courtesy of Polygon.
