Like other DICE titles of the past five years, Star Wars Battlefront will launch with a $50 season pass. Here’s what’s in it:
Several months ago, it was revealed that Star Wars Battlefront would follow the multiplayer season pass trend. While that was somewhat expected even before the announcement, how exactly DICE would make the $50 price tag worth it was yet to be revealed. And while we don’t have exact details like level names, here’s the make-up of the season pass’ offering:
- Four heroes – The base game launches with six heroes: Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine and Boba Fett. DICE/EA haven’t revealed who the DLC heroes will be, but a fair guess would be two Rebel and two Imperial heroes. While the series is littered with memorable characters, I wouldn’t be too surprised if DICE taps into “The Force Awakens” hype and features new movie heroes.
- Four game modes – Battlefront will launch with nine game modes and with the season pass, DICE promises to add four more to pass holders. While it’s understandable or at least expected that developers will charge for new characters or maps, charging for game modes seems like another frustrating way of dividing up the player base.
- 20 pieces of gear and ‘Star Cards’ – While there aren’t many details about exactly season pass owners can expect regarding gear, one could safely assume this means more alien species to play as or additional power ups via Star Cards.
- 16 multiplayer maps – Since the base game only ships with 12 maps, adding 16 to the mix will definitely help with the game’s longevity. Still, it’s slightly underwhelming considering only some of the base levels are playable in certain game modes. If that trend is to continue in the DLC, some modes may still lack level diversity. For example, in the base 13 maps, only 4 can be played in Walker Assault (arguably the game’s most anticipated mode). With season pass DLC, gamers can likely expect 4 additional Walker Assault maps as DLC rolls out. Whether or not 8 maps for the biggest game mode is enough is ultimately up to each gamer.
What do you think of the Battlefront season pass? Is there enough in it to warrant the $50 price tag, or will you be skipping DICE’s latest shooter? Feel free to share your thoughts with me in the comments below or on Twitter!
