With Xbox 360 backwards compatibility going live earlier this month on Xbox One, fans have now started to ask if original Xbox games will receive the same treatment.
Director of Program Management Mike Ybarra addressed the idea of original Xbox games on Xbox One directly when he spoke during an Inner Circle podcast last week.
While noting that “nothing is impossible,” Ybarra was quick to say that the engineering team was hard at work adding to the already existent 104 Xbox 360 games that run on Xbox One.
“[It would be] certainly very challenging,” said Ybarra. “Getting Xbox 360 games to work was incredibly challenging and really a multi-year engineering investment. Going all the way back to the original certainly would challenge the team.”
Once the roster of backwards compatible 360 titles is higher, the team may look for original Xbox games to bring to the One.
“I’m sure [the engineering team] would love that as an opportunity to go look at,” Ybarra said.
So, if you’re waiting to play your favorite Xbox games from the early 2000s, it seems you might have to be patient for a bit longer. As more games are released on Xbox One and games from the 360 are added, one has to wonder just how many original Xbox games would be worth bringing to the One at this point. With the likes of the Master Chief Collection and Rare Replay, many of the best-selling games of that generation are already playable on Xbox One. Sure, the original Star Wars Battlefront games would be high on my wishlist of originals, but beyond that, there aren’t many games I’m burning to play again on my Xbox One.
Do you hope the Xbox engineering team develops backwards compatibility for original Xbox titles? What games are you hoping come to back compat soon? Feel free to share your thoughts with me on Twitter or the comments below!
