With the Rio Olympic games just around the corner, Blizzard has big plans for Overwatch.
If you’re a big fan of Overwatch and the Olympics, developer Blizzard is ready to spoil you — for a price. Announced this afternoon through a blog update and a hype trailer, over 100 new cosmetic items are coming to Overwatch for the next three weeks.
Unlike all cosmetic items prior to today’s reveal, the Olympic themed cosmetic items can only be earned through paid loot crates (costing the typical $1.99), meaning crates you earn in-game won’t land you any of the new cosmetics. It’s only been a few hours, but Overwatch fans on Reddit are not exactly thrilled by this move by Blizzard.
On the bright side, a new brawl, deemed Lúcioball, is coming to Overwatch during the Olympics to keep everyone in a competitive mode. In the new brawl, teams of three Lúcios will face off and try to score as many goals as possible in four minutes. All of the hero’s usual moves plus jump pads and speed boost walls will keep matches interesting. Sound familiar? It should; Lúcioball is a rather shameless copy of Rocket League, but that doesn’t stop it from looking like a blast.
Blizzard closes out their blog update noting that the Summer Games are only the first seasonal event coming to Overwatch. While it’s great to see more content for the game, maybe next time they won’t hide new items behind a paywall.
