Gears of War 4 update adds legacy characters

Several series favorites are making a return to Gears of War 4 multiplayer.

With Gears of War 4’s third title update, developer The Coalition is bringing back a mix of new and old with 280 new cards that can be earned in Gear Packs. Of the 280, there are 13 new characters that are divided into the COG and Swarm teams. Among them is Armored Anya and Armored Sam in their Gears of War 3 gear as well as Zombie Minh and a two new DBs.

Along with the new characters, the legacy update is adding remastered fan-favorites Blood Drive and Clocktower to the multiplayer map rotation. The maps will be playable starting today for exclusively for season pass holders and will open up to everyone on January 17. During the exclusive week, season pass holders can expect bonus XP and Credits for playing the new maps in the Developer Playlist.

Additionally, season pass holders are in for even more bonuses. Starting January 13, owners of the pass will get a free Series 2 airdrop which contains 20 Gear Packs with a guaranteed 60 cards all from legacy update. Thankfully, Coalition made an infographic with some of the best content.

Coalition says there are 260 new weapon skins in today’s update.

Lastly, the update, which is scheduled to go live this afternoon, will feature new quit penalties that are detailed on the Gears forums. These additions to multiplayer should reduce quitting tendencies and punish repeat offenders.

PC gamers who are feeling the shrinking player base should note that Coalition Community Managers said major decisions are being made regarding cross platform play and there may be more on the subject later this month.

Two of the five community armor sets

Lastly, Coalition notes that five new armor sets are coming to the COG team later in January. The five were voted on by the community and will be free to all Gears of War 4 players who played anytime before December 31, 2016.

The legacy update for Gears of War 4 launches later today on Xbox One and Windows PC.
