Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn might not be getting the same press as Breath of the Wild, but that doesn’t mean it’s not selling like hotcakes.
When PS4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn launched on February 28, 2017, it marked a big step for longtime Killzone developer Guerrilla Games. It was their first new IP in many years, and as an open world FarCry Primal meets Zoids hybrid, Horizon was a whole new beast for the developer. Thankfully, Guerrilla’s development risk paid off in dividends.
In a press release this morning from Sony Interactive Entertainment, it was announced that Horizon Zero Dawn had sold 2.6 million copies (including both physical and digital sales) in its first two weeks. According to Sony, along with stellar sales and great critical reception, the game is now the best-selling new first party IP launch on the PS4 and the biggest debut Guerrilla Games has ever had.
“Guerrilla has created a game that is nothing short of exceptional, and the reaction we have seen from fans – from hours and hours of gameplay streaming to endless photo sharing – shows just how impactful it has been,” said Shawn Layden, Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios.
For those who have already sprinted through Horizon Zero Dawn, there’s more coming. “This is only the beginning of Aloy’s story and our exploration of the world of Horizon Zero Dawn, with the team already hard at work on an expansion to the story,” said Guerrilla Managing Director Hermen Hulst. Unfortunately for us, Hulst didn’t drop any further hints about where the expansion might take protagonist Aloy.
