Star Wars Battlefront II’s cinematic trailer leaked online, and the future is looking bright for DICE’s franchise installment.
Thanks to an email leak from Sony and EA DICE, Battlefront II reveal trailer has leaked a few days ahead of its scheduled April 15 reveal. Unfortunately, it seems EA is working hard to pull all videos of the trailer. In case you missed it, here’s a run down of all the details the trailer shared:
Unlike DICE’s first run-in with Battlefront, their sequel will feature all three film eras from the prequels all the way up to the upcoming Last Jedi. In fact, those who pre-order the game will secure access to Episode 8 hero skins for use in multiplayer.
Most obviously, the game will feature a campaign for the first time since DICE to the reigns of the franchise. While it could be more extensive than the trailer leads on, it seems the main character is a female shadow stormtrooper. Based on the footage, it also seems like her story takes place primarily after the events of Episode 6 leading into the new trilogy.
With DICE’s Battlefield 1 (2016), the developer created mini-campaigns that covered different perspectives on the conflict. It’s entirely possible DICE could try something similar with Battlefront II, but for now we’ll have to assume you’ll mainly play as a stormtrooper. In fact, DICE went out of its way to put in bold text that multiplayer specifically will feature all three eras of the series, implying things like the Clone Wars won’t be touched on in the campaign.
While, in hindsight, it may seem like a minute misstep, one complaint fans voiced during DICE’s first Battlefront was the lack of tauntauns. Nearly a decade earlier, the Ostrich-meets-Yeti creatures were a staple of Hoth battles when the series was helmed by the now-shuddered Pandemic Studios. Based of the Tauntaun mowing down down a stormtrooper in the teaser trailer, it seems DICE heard fans loud and clear.
In multiplayer, it seems the could even be a bending of lore as shown by Yoda battling Darth Maul. We also get a quick glimpse at Rey and Kylo Ren, so it seems like the new trilogy will definitely get some much-deserved attention. With the release date aiming Q4 2017, it won’t come as a surprise if DICE and EA market the game along with Last Jedi’s December release.
The concluding promo image features the female protagonist (if you can call a stormtrooper that) along with Rey and Darth Maul. While the heroes and villains that have become synonymous with the franchise are involved, it’s interesting to see DICE push their singleplayer character up with the heavy hitters. Below the image, there’s also a description saying the trailer was built to reflect what players can expect on PlayStation 4. Those who play on PC and Xbox Scorpio can expect even higher fidelity visuals.
At the very least, PlayStation has the marketing rights to Battlefront II, but it’s entirely possible that the platform will receive DLC before PC and Xbox like PS4 players already get in Call of Duty and Destiny.
Star Wars Battlefront II’s trailer didn’t feature a release date, but it’s safe to say the game will probably launch in November just a few weeks prior to Last Jedi hits theaters.
